POSITION DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES | ||
Queens College of the City University of New York invites applications for the position of Dean of the Division of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The Division includes the departments of Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Computer Science, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Family Nutrition and Exercise Science, Mathematics, Physics, and Psychology, as well as research centers such as the Center for the Biology of Natural Systems. Queens College was recently ranked “One of 25 Hottest Schools” in the 2008 Kaplan/Newsweek College Guide. Our scenic 77 acre campus hosts over 13,500 undergraduates and over 4,500 graduate students. Ph.D. candidates perform laboratory research on campus in a consortial arrangement with the Graduate Center of CUNY and the senior CUNY colleges, and many doctoral level courses are taught on campus. Under CUNY’s Decade of Science initiative, Queens College is hiring aggressively in the sciences, renovating labs and expanding core facilities, and constructing a new Chemistry addition. The Dean works closely with the department chairs and reports to the Provost. Duties: • Work with departments to develop an overarching vision for research and communicate this vision to students, faculty, and external constituencies. • Oversee laboratory renovation, construction projects, and facility upgrades. • Provide leadership in advancing the curriculum and developing new academic programs to address the changing needs of students and society. • Participate in recruitment and development of faculty and in providing support to untenured faculty. • Interact with students, faculty, college and university administrators, community members, and service providers in a variety of settings. • Allocate divisional resources, including faculty and support positions, research and instructional budgets, and start-up funds. • Pursue and monitor institutional grants. • Work with the Division of Education on K-12 math/science education initiatives. • Develop and implement research, outreach, and service programs. | ||
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS | ||
• Earned doctorate degree and academic credentials appropriate for appointment as tenured full professor in one of the departments of the division. • Significant administrative experience at the level of department chair, dean, or similar in a Ph.D. granting institution. • Significant achievements in research with a record of external funding. Desired Characteristics: • Commitment to urban education and to a diverse faculty and student body. • Collaborative and collegial management style. • Experience with curriculum review, laboratory renovation, and budget management. | ||
