POSITION DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES | ||
Medgar Evers College is one of 23 institutions within The City University of New York, the nation's largest urban public university. The College was established in 1969 with a mandate to meet the educational and social needs of the Central Brooklyn community. Named for the late civil rights leader, Medgar Wiley Evers (1925-1963), the College's mission is to develop and maintain high quality, professional, career-oriented undergraduate degree programs in the context of liberal education. The College offers programs both at the baccalaureate and at the associate degree levels, giving close attention to the articulation between the two-year and the four-year programs and is developing graduate programs in a number of areas. Responsibilities: Serving as Chief Academic Officer of the College, reporting directly to the President, the Senior Vice President Academic Affairs and Provost provides academic leadership, assuring the currency, integrity and quality of academic programs and services, and overseeing their direction and administration, consistent with the College’s mission, values and goals. Working in close partnership with the President, Vice Presidents and other executives, the Provost provides leadership in the development and implementation of the College’s mission. The Senior Vice President Academic Affairs and Provost acts on behalf of the President in his absence. The Senior Vice President Academic Affairs and Provost also works collaboratively with Deans and the faculty in shaping the direction and policies of the Schools of Business, Liberal Arts and Education, Science, Health and Technology and Continuing Education; the Charles Evans Inniss Library; several research centers and various academic advisement and support centers. S/he will be actively engaged in resource development and academic and budget planning; cross campus integration of technological and curricular innovation; recruitment, retention and professional development of a distinguished faculty and academic staff; and student learning, assessment and retention strategies. Some specific responsibilities of the Senior Vice President Academic Affairs and Provost include: • Leading and directing the development of the curriculum, academic programs and services. • Initiating development and overseeing implementation of strategic and tactical plans for reaching College goals. • Directing recruitment, retention and professional development of a distinguished faculty and academic staff. • Promoting student learning and assessment. • Leading the development of student retention strategies. • Promoting educational technologies for pedagogy in all academic areas. | ||
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS | ||
The ideal candidate will possess demonstrated academic experiences and leadership skills needed to foster the academic progress and vitality of the College: 5-10 years of academic administrative experience; a doctoral degree with 8-10 years of academic and scholarly achievement sufficient to earn the respect of the academic community and qualification for appointment as a full professor with tenure in an academic department; accomplishments in academic administration, including leadership in academic program development, strategic planning, budget management, initiation and carry-through of reforms; ability to work with faculty, with representatives elected by the faculty, and with all members of the academic community within a shared governance environment; and, a strong commitment to the mission of the College, and to the role of public higher education in a dynamic urban environment. | ||
