POSITION DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES




Under supervision, with considerable latitude for independent initiative and judgment, supervises subordinate staff engaged in professional software and hardware functions of moderate complexity for the campus; performs technical and professional work of moderate complexity; and performs as a project specialist for the planning and implementation of highly specialized hardware, software and systems projects for the college. This position in the Information Technology Resources department will provide support for all servers campus wide, advanced systems and other networked computer facilities on the campus. The environment consists of Windows 2003/2008, Apple Xservers, SAN's, Linux and Sun Solaris based servers and computers on a Cisco-based network. This position includes broad involvement in the technologies outlined, with a special focus on Windows system administration.
GENERAL WORK TASKS
Responsibilities include the following:
TECHNOLOGY SERVICE DELIVERY

    • Serves as a technical resource in all aspects of Servers, Systems and the other computer related hardware and software aspects.
    • Responsible for managing and maintaining servers and systems security; adheres to the University security regulations and policies.
    • Applicant should be in a position to support the College IT operations during College business hours, as well as evenings, holidays and week ends, according to the needs of the college and in response to emergency situations.
    • Planning, analysis, installation, configuration and management of Windows 2003/2008 servers, Microsoft Active Directory servers, Proxy servers, Windows based IIS Web servers, software and hardware updates/upgrades, contingency and capacity planning, and quality assurance. The Software in use, on servers and/or client systems, includes programming languages suites, database packages (Oracle & Microsoft SQL), spreadsheets, accounting and statistical packages, and other Internet based software on Windows. Apple and Solaris based servers and systems.
    • Develops migration procedures from an existing system to a new system. Maintains program and documentation libraries.
    • Responsible for planning, implementation and managing servers and systems disaster recovery (DR).
    • Develops, modifies and tests computer programs of varied complexity; supervises and/or acts as a project leader for programming projects. Programming environment includes use of Java J2EE, PERL, PHP, CGI, Korn Shell Batch/Script programming on Windows and Solaris OS based platforms. Examples of tasks are to replicate data between servers, create and maintain User accounts, server backup, file permissions and login scripts, create and maintain Group policies, software & hardware upgrade, troubleshooting and maintenance on servers, configure, manage and maintain print servers.
    • Assists in the supervision of systems programming activities in areas where there are many users, or where the data are extremely complex, or where coordination of the data sources involves a variety of Central Administration offices, or where the data sources entail extensive coordinated effort between the Central Office and the College, or with outside agencies.
    • Aids in the establishment of software security systems. Manages and maintains system security and policies on the Windows and Solaris OS based servers. Creates and maintains Access Control Lists; updates and maintains the User database on the Microsoft Active Directory Server. Applies automatic periodic security software patches/updates on the operating systems and application software packages for the entire campus computers.
    • Manages & maintains data definitions dictionary, Server inventory & database security procedures.

PLANNING AND OVERSIGHT

    • Keeps abreast of the latest developments in the field of computer hardware/software and communications technologies.
    • Participates in the preparation and review of computer and communications feasibility studies and specifications, and new proposals and their evaluations.
    • Develops bid specifications and participates in the solicitation and evaluation of bids.
    • Assists in the implementation of selected large contracts, monitors contract compliance and provides recommendations on support contract renewals.
    • Demonstrates strong organizational and time management skills. Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, students and staff members, with strong communications (written and oral) and customer service skills. Able to exchange information with others clearly and concisely.
    • Interacts with vendors for material procurement, handling, planning, and inventory control.
    • Participates in the conduct of site/facilities analyses, including backup sites.
    • Plans and develops backup and restore procedures and ensures appropriate implementation and scheduling.
    • Assists in the research and testing of hardware and software to maintain or enhance operations; recommends the purchase of such materials.
    • Develops and maintains documentation required for operating units.

STAFF MANAGEMENT
As project leader, supervises staff assigned to project work group.
OTHER (GENERAL)
Other related duties as assigned, including when appropriate performing responsibilities of a lower title.
TECHNOLOGY SPECIFIC TASKS

    • Performs all aspects of data base administration directly related to the Stellent CMS servers

    • Evaluates data base software packages. Installs upgrades and maintains database system software packages such as Oracle & Microsoft SQL Servers.



QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS




    1. A High School diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
    2. An equivalent of seven years' experience post-high school that can be met by one of the following:
    • Seven years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position. CUNY considers full-time experience to be 35 hours per week.
    • An Associate's degree plus five years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position.
    • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution plus three years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position.
    3. Demonstrated English proficiency, including the ability to speak, read, writes, and understands English well enough to meet minimally acceptable performance standards set for job tasks.

The candidate must demonstrate experience in the platforms and tools indicated in the position description and duties above. Must be particularly strong in Windows system administration.
Must have a good understanding and working experience with protocols such as TCP/IP, SMTP, SNMP-3, SSL, IMAP4, POP3, HTTP, XML, LDAP, DNS, DHCP, and FTP.
Additional experience in some of the following areas and tools: Unix systems (SUN Solaris desirable), XML, HTML, CGI, PHP, SHTML, SUN One Directory Server (LDAP), Network security, Cisco Switches & Routers, Copper & fiber cabling.

Requirements for Level 3 may be met by additional education (e.g. college credits or degrees), or experience (e.g. documented projects of at least moderate complexity completed by the candidate, formal peer recognition of work, or other work that demonstrates well above minimum ability and experience required for Level 1 of the title), or certifications (Microsoft, Oracle, SUN), or specialized training completed, pertinent to the tools and environment at the College. Technologies of interest are those listed in the previous paragraphs and in the position description above.
