POSITION DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES



John Jay College invites nominations and applications for the position of Associate Provost in the Office of Academic Affairs. Located steps from Lincoln Center at the cultural heart of New York City, John Jay College, a senior college of the City University of New York (CUNY) dedicated to the mission of “Educating for Justice,” offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees and participates in the doctoral programs of the Graduate School of CUNY. The College is one of the most ethnically diverse-serving colleges in the northeastern United States. Under the leadership of its fourth president, Jeremy Travis, the College is undergoing a transformation that includes unprecedented faculty hiring, new undergraduate majors and master’s programs, and a new 600,000 square foot building ready for occupancy in 2011.

    Reporting to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs/Provost, the Associate Provost provides leadership and coordination of the college’s activities in the pursuit of academic excellence and student success.  In particular, he/she is responsible for faculty development through The Center for the Advancement of Teaching, which reports to the Associate Provost. The Associate Provost is responsible for implementation of the College’s Strategic Retention Plan. He/she will lead the College in examining and improving retention and graduate rates of all students and will assist departments and academic support units in developing student learning outcomes and appropriate assessment plans for these outcomes.  The Associate Provost chairs the College’s Strategic Planning Committee and in that capacity will assess, report on, and improve the effectiveness of all entities.  The Associate Provost will integrate assessment, planning, and institutional research to encourage assessment and improvement of the College’s academic programs and administrative services and will be expected to inspire and lead the faculty and the academic deans to create a culture of continuous improvement at the college.  The directors of Institutional Research and Assessment report to the Associate Provost, who will be the Provost’s partner in leading the College’s Strategic Planning Process and Middle States Accreditation Review.  The Associate Provost will act on behalf of the Provost when required, write reports and policy statements, and perform other management and supervisory responsibilities as assigned by the Provost.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS



An earned doctorate (or equivalent) with a minimum of eight years of faculty and academic administrative/leadership experience is required. A minimum of two years as an academic department chair or as an equivalent academic administrator preferred. Also required is a commitment to higher education in a multi-cultural setting with a mission of both access and excellence. Academic record consistent with appointment as a full professor in an academic unit of the college is preferred. The successful candidate will have effective communication skills, exceptional strength in writing, demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, and experience working with faculty in a shared governance environment.
