POSITION DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES | ||
Medgar Evers College is a diverse academic institution that plays an important role in its Brooklyn community. Serving more than 7,000 undergraduate students, the College offers degrees at the Associate and Baccalaureate levels. The Executive Director Information Technology/Chief Information Officer (CIO) provides leadership and management for the College’s department of Information Technology which includes employees assigned to the following service areas: instructional technology services; administrative computing services; telecommunications and network services. The CIO is expected to support teaching, learning and research at the College, while ensuring adequate administrative services. The university is migrating to Oracle/PeopleSoft, and the CIO will be an important part of the MEC team. The CIO reports to the Senior Vice President/Chief Operating Officer and will serve as a member of the President’s Cabinet. The CIO is also a key member of the College’s Technology Advisory Committee (TAC), comprised of administration, faculty and students, which will provide strategic and policy guidance regarding technology services. The CIO will also administer and manage the Student Technology Fee program that supports improvements to student technology services, and participates as required, in University technology enterprise planning activities. Organizational Background: The CIO is responsible for all aspects of campus wide technological needs for students, faculty and staff. Responsibilities of the Position: The CIO is the chief strategist and visionary for IT planning and implementation for the College. Managing the daily operations of the information technology resources, setting direction for personnel, communicating technology solutions in a collaborative and proactive style and providing quality service to end-users are all part of this mandate. The CIO plays a major leadership role in organizing, managing and strengthening a comprehensive information technology infrastructure that will support and transform the administrative and instructional areas of the College and support the academic mission. Specifically, the CIO will be required to: • Provide leadership and management direction to the IT staff; ensure that technology projects are driven to satisfactory completion, on schedule, within allocated appropriations. • Through continuous communication and consultation with faculty, students, staff, and administrators, develop a proactive, creative and collaborative environment to ensure that technology solutions are meeting the changing demands within the College. The CIO at Medgar Evers College will: • Manage and oversee the implementation, upgrade and future build-out of the College’s network infrastructure to ensure the stability, reliability and security of College systems, data, applications and information, as well as to meet the changing technology demands of the various stakeholders within the College. • Develop college-wide initiatives that will support administration, faculty and students through the design and development of web-based application services. • Work with the College’s Office of Sponsored Programs to actively research and pursue grant opportunities to support instructional technology initiatives. • Demonstrate a continuous effort to improve operations, improve customer service, decrease turnaround times, streamline and reengineer work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly with department heads to provide quality customer service. • Research and recommend emerging technologies for academic, instructional and media services that will support the operations of the College to better serve the students and faculty and support the academic mission. • Establish guidelines and programs for effective information technology management. • Plan, organize, coordinate, and direct the activities of the IT staff both within the College and in conjunction with University enterprise efforts. • Recommend long-range and short-range management information systems plans and budgets to the Senior VP/COO and other College leadership. • Proactively present and offer technology solutions and support to department directors and chairs in an effort to improve customer service throughout the College environment. • Set policies to ensure privacy of data and security of data processing facilities. • Collaboratively work with the University CIO in the design and implementation of enterprise-wide technology solutions and services that will produce strategic, operational, technology and cost benefits to the College, such as the University-wide ERP initiative. Work with other campus-based and central office technology leaders on committees and projects. | ||

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS | ||
A bachelor’s degree and at least eight years of related experience, with a least five years of experience as a CIO, assistant-CIO or the equivalent in higher education, public sector, industry or not-for profit environment required, while demonstrating increasing responsibility throughout his/her career. An advanced degree in a relevant field is preferred. Combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: • Ability to provide leadership for all technology and related services that support student learning, teaching, research, administrative processes, and public service. • The successful candidate will have: a proven record as a leader and manager who has transformed information technology operations within a large and diverse organization; outstanding communication skills; experience developing and managing strategic technology with administrative and instructional systems; user centered services; and a demonstrated experience of driving high profile and complex technology projects to completion. • A collaborative management style and the ability to foster long-term relationships with the College’s many constituencies are critical to the success of the prospective candidate. • Applicant must provide evidence of demonstrated commitment to inclusive excellence through diversity Application Procedure: the search committee will commence the review of applications on December 14, 2009 and will continue until the position is filled. | ||
