POSITION DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES




The Senior CLT position will serve as Greenhouse and Plant Facilities Manager and play a central role for an active research and teaching program in plant biology, which includes activities from undergraduate to PhD. Lehman is home to the CUNY- New York Botanical Garden Ph.D. subprogram in Plant Sciences and will soon be home for a new Science building (under construction) to house plant biologists, a Plant Sciences Center at Lehman College, and new greenhouses and plant growth facilities that augment current plant growth infrastructure.

The Senior CLT will be responsible for growth and maintenance of plants grown in all departmental plant growth facilities and areas, including but not limited to greenhouses and surrounding gardens, growth rooms, and maize field in the Department of Biological Sciences. Plants may include corn, rice, cycads, peas, tobacco, Arabidopsis, spinach, legumes, etc. and require environmental conditions from temperate to tropical and desert. Work will include and is not limited to growth and maintenance of plant materials for ongoing teaching and research needs as well as maintaining teaching and research collections. Duties will involve among other things, watering, computerized irrigation setup, soil testing, ordering, monitoring plant health and application of fertilizers, pest biocontrol, pesticides, and herbicides.

The Senior CLT will be responsible for managing all greenhouse related operations that are ongoing 12 months of the year and seven days of the week. The Senior CLT will be required to supervise a staff that may include work study students and adjunct staff. The individual will serve as an information resource for “users” of the plant growth facilities, who may include faculty, staff, students, and visiting scientists.

The Senior CLT will be responsible to the Department of Biological Sciences through Department's Chief CLT and the departmental greenhouse committee. The Senior CLT will interface with the departmental greenhouse committee which provides oversight on various issues relating to the greenhouse including space usage and protocols. In consultation with users, the Senior CLT will be responsible for applying pest and herbicide control as needed in the various growth spaces, including but not limited to the greenhouse, growth rooms, and maize field. The individual will also be responsible for keeping track of environmental and growth conditions in the greenhouse facilities via computerized data acquisition. The individual will be responsible for communicating in a timely fashion with the Buildings and Grounds department to coordinate maintenance of the physical facilities for plant growth, and plowing/fertilization of the maize field and any other experimental field and the educational/horticultural gardens of the department. The Senior CLT will be responsible for soil testing, herbicide treatment and computerized irrigation of the maize field and any other experimental field and the educational/horticultural gardens of the department. The Senior CLT will be responsible for communicating with the Information Technology Center to maintain facility computers, and with the departmental greenhouse committee on plant growth and user issues. The Senior CLT will also serve as a public liaison to facilitate visits to the greenhouses by local students and other college visitors.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS




Minimum Requirements
For appointment as a senior college laboratory technician, a person, in addition to possessing knowledge and skills related to the discipline, shall be a high school graduate possessing one of the following sets of minimum additional qualifications: (a) eight (8) years of work or experience appropriate to the requirements of the department at a level of competence comparable to that indicated by apprenticeship in the skilled trades; OR (b) an associate degree and a minimum of six (6) years of experience of the type described above; OR (c) a bachelor's degree in an area appropriate to the duties to be performed plus four (4) years related work experience; OR (d) an appropriate combination of at least eight (8) years of education and work experience beyond high school.

Preferred Qualifications
It is preferred that the successful candidate will have a minimum BA degree in plant biology, horticulture or related area and minimum of 3 years relevant experience (or associate degree and at least 5 years relevant experience) with growing plants for research and teaching (especially plants currently grown at the College growth facilities).

The individual must be licensed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in “category 3A Ornamentals and Turf.” The individual should have computer skills needed to monitor the greenhouse conditions on and off-site. The successful candidate must be self motivated, be able to work independently and communicate and interact effectively with others.
