History
The New York City Student Shakespeare Festival (NYCSSF) is a teacher development program produced by the Paul A. Kaplan Center for Educational Drama at the CUNY/Creative Arts Team. Founded in 1994 to encourage students to celebrate William Shakespeare’s work, the Festival program features a mentor model of professional development for teachers and culminates with student performances at a major Off Broadway playhouse. Participation is open to all New York City (and surrounding area) elementary, middle, and high school teachers.

Participation in the New York City Student Shakespeare Festival Includes-

• 13 hours of learner-centered devising and directing staff development at the CUNY/Creative Arts Team
  
  
• 3 school site visits by NYCSSF Teaching Artists
  
  
• Teachers direct and students perform an 8 minute piece of theatre, inspired by a Shakespearean theme, character, or collections of scenes, on the stage of the Lucille Lortel Theatre
  
• T-shirts, Shakespearean texts, certificates, and a program for all participating teachers and their students
